Dr. Orlando Lopez is the Director of the Dental Materials and Biomaterials Program and Coordinator of the Small Business (SBIR/STTR) Program at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). He leads efforts to strengthen a national research agenda that advances basic science and the translation of cutting-edge technical innovations in biomaterials, oral biodevices and digital dentistry technologies to address gaps in oral health and overall health. He is a lead contributor to trans-NIH initiatives, including the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for COVID-19 and Prognostics for long COVID, and oversees an interagency research program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) supporting the development of clinically relevant standards for novel dental biomaterials and oral biosensors. Dr. Lopez is also major contributor to professional working groups and industry standards committees, including NIH Data Management Working Group, NIH Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group, Trans-NIH Biomedical Technology and Engineering Collective, DoD’s Working Group on Computational Modeling, IEEE 2933 Standard on Clinical IoT Interoperability with TIPPSS, IEEE Healthcare Blockchain and AI, DMV Chapter of Blockchain in Healthcare Today, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Biomedical Engineering Technical Committee, American Dental Association (ADA) Standards on Dental Products, American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council (ACT-IAC) Blockchain and AI Working Groups.
